As we all know, English is the world’s universal language. It is the native language of almost 70 countries. However, it does not mean that we should not learn any other languages aside from English. It can help us understand other cultures by learning about their language, given that proper enrichment is attained. It is not just a must, but it has become so important especially for those who go to different countries from time to time. Knowing other languages is in fact, very beneficial not only in terms of intellectual aspect, but also in a social aspect since being able to communicate with people in their native tongue makes talking with them feels real and may seem full of interest regarding their culture, and it is quite full of respect as well. Many schools and academies here in Singapore provide classes for different language enrichment such as Chinese; Mandarin or Cantonese, Nihonggo for Japanese, French, even Nahuatl and Spanish. These classes provide knowledge about these languages from basic information, to more advanced form of the language throughout the syllabus.
For some parents that want their child to learn another language, they often start with educating their child in early age, from 3 to 5 years old, and enrol them to such schools that teach their desired language. This and language teaches (e.g. Chinese tutor in Singapore) helps the child to cultivate the learning experience of the language, making it as natural as it can be when speaking the language, especially once they have grown with it. Even though with our technological advancement of today’s modern generation, misunderstandings and miscommunication still take place from in different forms of communication. This is also why learning other languages is important since it can take us a bit more close to people that we talk to, enabling us to understand each other on what we truly mean as we speak their language.
It is not only the use of words that make us understand other languages. Several factors are also included when learning other languages. One of which is the tone. Some languages may have different tones to identify the emotion behind the context of the words, especially when asking questions, explaining, or even when in a normal conversation. The same can be applied to gestures. Different languages and cultures have developed their own gestures when speaking their native tongue. With such knowledge of the matter, one can easily understand the other’s message regardless if the spoken words are not as clear as they should be. After all, the non verbal actions may not be as effective as verbal communication can be, but it can help us understand each other better in a much simpler way.
As for some, learning a different language can prove to be effective especially in the industry of business. In the corporate world, it is normal for business executives and managers to travel from different countries to another, something that would require knowledge of different languages to be able to build better relationship to other people from different countries. We must never expect people from other countries to understand our native tongue, especially English when it’s considered as the universal language, because not everyone in the world have the opportunity to learn so.
